Horses to Watch: St Leger Festival Day 3

CARMERS in Action
  1. TREFOR – Betfred Portland Heritage Handicap C2 (14:25)

Trefor has been in very good form in his career so far: 6 wins from 17 runs. That kind of strike-rate in a competitive handicap is notable. He won a big York handicap over 5 and a half furlongs not long ago, beating several horses who are entered again here. That demonstrates he’s fit, in form, and can perform over similar sprint distances under pressure.  Even when not winning, he’s been place-contending frequently. He doesn’t seem to be an “all or nothing” type; he regularly shows up and gives a good account.  He won at York off a mark that seems similar to or slightly below what he’s carrying here, meaning this rise in weight is not necessarily prohibitive. It suggests he may still be “well-in” as the handicapper tends to reward consistent improvement. With up to 6 places available on this race, Trefor holds strong each-way claims.

  • CARMERS – Betfred St Leger Stakes G1 (15:40)

His Queen’s Vase win and strong effort in longer pattern races show he can stay further than many in the field. The St Leger’s trip (1 mile 6 furlongs) isn’t out of reach for him. He has improved with each run and is stepping up in class in a way that feels measured and logical. He’s not over-faced yet; there seems more to come rather than having done his best already.

At Royal Ascot, Carmers finished ahead of Scandinavia in the Queen’s Vase. Scandinavia is one of the favourites now, so that prior head-to-head gives Carmers a form edge or at least something to lean on. With 3 places available on the market, each-way could be the safest bet here given the level of competition.

  • DEL MARO – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes C2 (16:15)

Debut run was promising, overcoming a bad start, running on well — that suggests he has both ability and attitude. Horses who improve markedly from debut often do well in maiden stakes. A step up isn’t needed in trip; he already ran over a mile, so the distance is well within his range. With just one run, he has plenty of scope to improve, especially with more fitness, experience, and stronger tactics. Likely to be one of the better-bred / better-prepared in this race given his connections. In EBF Maidens, Godolphin / Appleby horses are always respected. Sired by Camelot, who has produced both middle-distance horses and those with stamina. Camelot’s progeny often appreciate a mile and beyond, especially when well-managed. Charlie Appleby is a top stable with a strong record in bringing forward well-bred 2-yos in maiden and EBF company. Billy Loughnane is a rising star and another positive here. If the improvement is made we could have another Godolphin star here.
