The St Leger Stakes at Doncaster is the oldest of Britain’s five Classics, first run in 1776. Staged over 1 mile 6½ furlongs, it is the final leg of the Triple Crown, following the 2000 Guineas and the Derby. The race is renowned as a thorough examination of stamina and class, open exclusively to three-year-olds, and has produced some of the most iconic staying performances in racing history. Each year it provides a fascinating mix of Derby contenders stepping up in trip and progressive stayers peaking at the right time, making it a highlight of the flat racing calendar. This year the race is worth around £400,000 to the winner.

Winner of the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and has run well in staying tests since — a genuine stayer with proven form over 1m6f. Recently ran in the Great Voltigeur and has shown consistency at staying trips.
Stamina pedigree and previous win at Doncaster-style distances suggest he handles the trip. Comfortable in a race where tempo and stamina are decisive — likely to be prominent/close to the pace. Trainer Paul Twomey knows how to place his stayers well; jockey Will Lee booked.
Verdict: If he gets a good late cruising tempo he can be hard to peg back; check recent sectionals (often he finishes strongly).
2. FURTHUR
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 16/08/25 | Newbury | 1m 5.5f | C1 | 1/6 | N/A | N/A | 13/2 | Good to Firm |
| 10/07/25 | Newmarket (July) | 1m 5f | C1 | 5/5 | Scandinavia | 25 | 7/2 | Good to Firm |
| 18/06/25 | Ascot | 1m 6f | C1 | 2/13 | Carmers | 0.75 | 20/1 | Good to Firm |
Progressive type who won the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury and has been placed on staying tests — arrives here with a solid staying profile. Recent run pattern: improving through the summer with a nice Group 3 success.
Strong finishing effort in his latest — looks to have been targeted at this kind of stamina test. Andrew Balding has two in the race (see Tarriance), and Furthur is the more proven at pattern level.
Verdict: Likely to be ridden with a balance of patience and a well-timed move — Oisin Murphy’s booking suggests connections want pace judgment late on. Check whether run style expects to sit mid-division or closer to the lead.
3. LAMBOURN
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 20/08/25 | York | 1m 4f | C1 | 5/7 | Pride of Arras | 3 | 4/5F | Good to Firm |
| 29/06/25 | Curragh | 1m 4f | G1 | 1/10 | N/A | N/A | 8/13F | Good |
| 07/06/25 | Epsom | 1m 4f | C1 | 1/18 | N/A | N/A | 13/2 | Good |
Classic form: Epsom Derby winner (and followed with Irish Derby form) — a high-class colt with proven ability at 1m4f, and stepping up/maintaining at extended trips is the key question. Lambourn has won top-level route races this season (including the Derby).
Class is evident — a Derby winner carries weight in formbook terms. However, the step from 1m4f (Derby) to the Leger trip (c.1m6f) often tests stamina and race tactics (front-running Derby style can be a help or harm depending on tempo).
Verdict: Lambourn has shown an ability to make all the running; the key is whether he’ll get the strong staying test and whether others can pick him off late. If the pace is slow up front he may be vulnerable to strong stayers finishing fastest. Trainer Aidan O’Brien’s record with stayers and Classic types is notable.
4. RAHIEBB
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 31/07/25 | Goodwood | 1m 4f | C1 | 4/7 | Merchant | 7.75 | 17/2 | Good |
| 18/06/25 | Ascot | 1m 6f | C1 | 3/13 | Carmers | 1 | 9/1 | Good to Firm |
| 15/05/25 | York | 1m 4f | C3 | 2/8 | Merchant | 2.5 | 11/2 | Good to Firm |
Has shown solid form in staying maidens/conditions and placed in some decent staying events — a bit less exposed than the principal Group performers but has been running consistently. Recent pattern shows improving form through progressive steps.
Potentially an each-way contender if the big names fail to stay or encounter trouble — a typical Varian improver that could benefit from a strongly run race.
Verdict: Watch ground preference and whether he is ridden prominently or held up; consistency and race fitness make him one to watch for a frame finish, may just be outpaced.
5. SCANDINAVIA
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 29/07/25 | Goodwood | 2m | C1 | 1/8 | N/A | N/A | 4/1 | Good |
| 10/07/25 | Newmarket (July) | 1m 5f | C1 | 1/5 | N/A | N/A | 11/8F | Good to Firm |
| 18/06/25 | Ascot | 1m 6f | C1 | 5/13 | Carmers | 1.5 | 16/1 | Good to Firm |
One of the most progressive stayers in the Aidan O’Brien yard this year — strong recent form in staying tests and looks to have a profile built for the Leger trip (strong gallop, stays on). Market and tip pieces rate him highly.
Proven to quicken strongly and keep going once he gets in a rhythm — that long, loping action is often ideal for Doncaster’s long straight. He’s been mentioned as a leading chance in multiple previews and looks to have the stamina profile to see out 1m6f.
Verdict: Likely to be ridden positively but with patience — the key is whether the early pace allows him to get the lead or sit just off a strong gallop; jockey Tom Marquand keeps him balanced. Given O’Brien’s stable tactics with stayers, he’s a horse to keep track of in the run-home.
6. STAY TRUE
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 20/08/25 | York | 1m 4f | C1 | 4/7 | Pride of Arras | 1.25 | 11/1 | Good to Firm |
| 10/05/25 | Lingfield | 1m 3.5f | C1 | 2/6 | Puppet Master | 0.25 | 5/2 | Good to Firm |
| 09/04/24 | Leopardstown | 1m 2f | Maiden | 1/10 | N/A | N/A | 3/1 | Good |
Less exposed but progressive — has posted credible placed efforts stepping up in trip, looks to handle a stamina test and is trained to improve. Runs have included solid efforts at staying trips; connections believe he is ready for a big step.
Being with the O’Brien stable brings tactical options; Stay True is often ridden to conserve energy for a late run. He may not have the same peak form figures as Lambourn or Scandinavia but could make the frame if things pan out.
Verdict: Watch position into the straight — if the race becomes tactical he could get clogged, but in a strongly run Leger his late response can be a danger to others.
7. TARRIANCE
| Date | Track | Distance | Class/ Group | Finishing Pos | Beaten By | Beaten Lengths | SP | Going |
| 23/08/25 | York | 1m 6f | C2 | 1/12 | N/A | N/A | 5/1 | Good to Firm |
| 24/07/25 | Sandown | 1m6f | C3 | 1/6 | N/A | N/A | 5/2 | Good |
| 15/06/25 | Doncaster | 1m6f | C5 | 2/9 | Gravitas | 0.25 | 4/7F | Good to Firm |
An improver who has won several times this season at staying trips (including recent narrow victories): a tough, progressive stayer who has been improving with each start. He has been highlighted as a potential each-way type.
Tarriance’s pattern is one of steady improvement — not a proven Group 1 performer but a hardy, well-ridden stayer who could outrun market expectations if the bigger names underperform. Balding’s handling of stayers and Keane’s booking are positives.
Verdict: Outsider in the market but could run on strongly; he’s one for the shortlist for an each-way interest, especially if the race turns into a slog where durability and tenacity win out.
